TYPE

The University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department will present its Jazz Band with the Big Time Jazz Orchestra (BTJO) in a special Scholarship Concert on Tuesday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Manion Theatre. Proceeds from the concert will go toward a scholarship for a UW-Superior music major for excellence in jazz studies.

Under the direction of Greg Kehl Moore, professor of music and jazz program director at UW-Superior, the concert will feature the Jazz Band playing works by Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Gordan Goodwin, Pat Metheny, Charles Mingus, Bob Mintzer, Ellis Marsalis, Astor Piazzolla and Radiohead.

The BTJO/UWS Jazz Scholarship, first established in 2002, is awarded to a UW-Superior music student based on excellence in jazz studies. Winners are selected by the faculty of the UW-Superior Music Department. The 2024 winner will be announced at intermission during this the concert.

Since its founding in 1990 by artistic director Randy Lee, the BTJO has been known for the consistently high quality of its musicians and the challenging literature it performs. In fulfilling its mission as a non-profit organization, the BTJO regularly donates its services for charitable causes, of which this evening’s concert is only the most recent example. Other BTJO performances have raised funds for the Duluth Bethel Society, the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, along with many other charitable organizations.

Suggested donation for this concert is $10. Manion Theatre is in the Holden Fine Arts Center at 1805 Catlin Ave. in Superior.
