Joseph Stensland is a graduate student here at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Joe is a part of the Counseling and Guidance Graduate program.
This summer, he got to put his skills to the test on an international level at Lansi-Suomen Opisto (West Finland College) Huittinen, Finland. This is Joe's second summer overseas teaching English to a group of children aging in range from 9 to 17 years old. Joe is also getting first hand experiences with the children he is also taking classes online through UW-Superior's Distance Learning Center and through Continuing Education. Through his online class work and field work he is gaining communication and interactive skills that he will be able to use in the real world.
"This summer I will gain 300 hours of teaching experience and much more, "says Stensland. "I've been able to get so much more from this employer on an international basis then I could've ever thought…The skills I have learned as an aspiring school counselor really does embody the liberal arts mission of UW-Superior. I can speak Russian with the students and listen to what they have to say and assist them with broadening their English skills at the same time… School counselors need to be able to interact with students, teach a lesson, and manage a classroom. However, teaching English alone doesn't go far enough in my opinion."
Joe is overall gaining a sense of his own potential and is happy to share that on both a national and international level. He is continuing to learn and develop along his experiences.
Career services wishes Joe the best of luck and support on his journey!
