The Benedictine Health Center is a long term care facility for 120 residents. They have volunteer opportunities working in physical therapy, OT, preschool for children ages 3 – 5, activities for seniors, visiting, the gift shop, and many more!

The Boys and Girls Club of Duluth is dedicated to ensuring that the community's disadvantaged youth have greater access to quality programs and services that will enhance their lives and shape their futures. CASDA provides services to individuals hurt by domestic abuse, sexual assault, and child abuse. They have a Women/Children Homeless Shelter, which provides legal services, community education, advocacy services, and support groups. Volunteer opportunities are available in all areas. There is also an internship available as an on call advocate to hospitals or the police station.

The Circles of Support program builds strong relationships by linking community members with individuals or families who are experiencing poverty. The emphasis is on assisting people in their move from poverty by making it possible for them to gather enough money, food, and friends to thrive. They are looking for volunteers who are passionate about ending poverty and willing to make a personal connection by helping to set goals and support those who are in need.

Courage Duluth's sports and recreation center inspires students with physical abilities to train, practice, and play as an introduction to Paralympics sport and competition, wellness, and creative arts. Activities include archery, dog sledding, golf, martial arts, wheelchair basketball, track and filed, horseback riding, and the Paralympics Academy Sports Camp. Activities defer depending on location.

The Damiano Soup kitchen has weekend volunteer opportunities from 8:30am – 1:30pm or 1:30pm to 6:30pm, in which meals will be prepared and served, followed by a light clean up. There is a limit of 7 volunteers in the kitchen at one time, so interested individuals must call ahead to schedule a time.

The Douglas County 4-H works toward the positive development of youth by providing hands-on learning, leadership skills, and friendships. Volunteers are needed to plan monthly meetings, organize activities and games for the after-school program, and contact guest speakers. Training is held in October to explain the program and allow volunteers to familiarize themselves with the provided resources.

The Duluth Community Garden Program provides plots to members of the Duluth community, as well as kid's gardening services for Kid's Café and Girl Power. They also operate the Cannery, a food preservation education and equipment lending service.

The Harbor House Crisis Shelter provides a 30 day emergency shelter for women and families. They are looking for volunteers to lend a hand in sorting donations, mailings, cleaning, lawn/garden care, and maintenance/repairs. Monetary and gift donations are also accepted and appreciated, with needs including toilet paper, diapers, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, and non-perishable food.

The Humane Society of Douglas County gives humane care and treatment for animals, which includes returning lost animals to their owners and seeking suitable homes for animals without owners. Volunteers are needed to walk dogs, groom animals, clean the facility, and work at various events. Monetary and gift donations are also accepted and appreciated, including paper towels, cat litter, hand sanitizer, garbage bags, toys, as well as dog and cat food.

The Bethany Crisis Shelter offers volunteers the opportunity to work directly with youth, up to age 17. They provide a safe and nurturing environment for children placed there due to abuse/neglect, minor delinquency issues, difficulties at home, and runway/homeless situations. Three shifts are available every day, 7:00am – 3:00pm, 3:00pm – 11:00pm, and 11:00pm – 7:00am. Contacts can be made through working with social workers, police, and probation officers, as well as participation in weekly groups and daily activities with a focus on problem solving and skill development.

The Lutheran Social Service has 30 programs in the Greater Duluth Area. LSS MN is the largest, non-profit social service agency in MN. Most of their programs utilize volunteers in various capacities, including student community service options, undergrad and graduate level internships, and ongoing community volunteer positions.

Northwood Children's Services is a private, not-for-profit, multi-service agency that provides professional care, education, and treatment for boys and girls with emotional, behavioral, and learning disabilities. Enthusiastic volunteers are needed year round, and there are also internship opportunities for undergrad and graduate students.
PAVSA (Program for Aid to Victims of Sexual Assault)

PAVSA provides support and advocacy to victims of sexual violence. Volunteers are provided with everything necessary to become advocates, with an intense 40 hour training program, ongoing training opportunities, support, a $50 stipend for hospital calls, and the opportunity to gain experience while providing an incredibly valuable serve to the community and victims of sexual violence. Enrollment for October 2007's fall training begins in September 2007.

The Retired Senior Volunteer Program welcomes and appreciates thri volunteers (who can be any age, not necessarily seniors) and provide a number of opportunities, including work with the Bong Memorial, schools (Superior, Maple), museums (Fairlawn, Firehouse – East End), nursing homes, meal sites, and vet clinics.

The Safe Haven Shelter for Battered Women provides a safe place for battered women and their children, and as well supports a mission to end violence against women. Volunteers are needed for both short and long term positions, including activity leaders, child care assistants, tutors, office assistants, and donation assistants. A basic training course must be attended by all volunteers and is offered periodically.

Superior Housing Authority hosts many different community events, including Catlin Green, a program in which volunteers plant flower and vegetable gardens for families and children and encourage neighbors to support one another. Another co-run event is the Youth After-School Program, which provides nutritious meals, educational programs, creative art contests, and games for youth.
