Grants and Research Office

Business and Economics Department

The Department of Business and Economics works toward developing effective decision-makers and leaders in both the private and public sectors through a strong practical business education as well as a comprehensive liberal arts education. Academic programs instill excellence, build confidence, and develop strong leadership skills that graduates can use throughout their careers.

Academic programs include an Accounting major; a Business Administration major with concentrations in finance, international business, management and marketing; an Economics major; and a major in Transportation and Logistics Management.

While pursuing their majors, students study under highly qualified faculty members who have expertise in their specialized fields as well as extensive business experience. Our Business and Economic students expect more from their academic experience at UWS.

RECENT RESEARCH

This fall, Dr. Bruce Kibler worked with two sections of BUS 380 students (Principles of Management) who conducted research for Habitat for Humanity:

The first group (consultants) were given the task of reviewing H4H's processes and mode of doing business, from donations to accounting to building the homes and ordering the materials. Presentation

The second group (Restore) was tasked with duplicating a H4H business model called a Restore for the Duluth/Superior area. The Restore takes donations of building materials, new and used,  cleans them up and sells them for a much lower price in order to enable people to refurbish their homes at a much lowered cost to using only new materials. The group researched possible locations, costs, supply chain, marketing and etc. in order to give the board of H4H an idea of what is entailed in starting this venture in the Duluth/Superior area and what they could expect in terms of returns.
