This week's tech tip is about securing the E-Hive/PeopleSoft data that you have access to.  Students, Staff, and Faculty at UW-superior have access to sensitive personal data in E-hive.  Sometimes it's just your own information, and for those that work on campus it may be others information.  Following the steps below will insure that personal information and data is kept secure and viewed only by those that need the data for their official university use.  

For students -   it's all about securing your own data:   

• Never share your password - Access to your E-Hive account is access to your confidential academic, financial and personal information.
  
• Change your password on a regular basis - Change your password at the start of each semester or more.
• If you suspect that someone is using your password fraudulently or if  you are being harassed through email, contact the campus safety office for assistance.  
  

For Student Employees -  Student employees who, as part of their job duties have access to student records:   

• Never share your password  - Access to your E-Hive account is access to confidential academic , financial, and personal information.
  
• Change your password on a regular basis -  Change your password at the start of each semester or more.
  
• You may only use your access to records for the expressed purpose of the job you are performing.
  
• You must understand that the data you have access to while working is not to be shared with others while working or not working.
  
• You are held to the same professional ethical and legal standards as any other state employee.

For Employees -Employees are required to secure the data that they have access to.  Here are some idea's:

• Change your password at the beginning of each semester.  IT workers and those with higher security access should change passwords even more frequently.
  
• Never log into the E-Hive for a student employee.  Contact the Technology Service Department's Applications Group to obtain a student account for your student employee.  You can reach them by calling or e-mailing the Technology Helpdesk at x8300.
  
• Use password protected screen savers and lock your computer when you step away from your desk.
  
• You may only use your access to records for the expressed purpose of the job you are performing.
  
• You must understand that the data you have access to while working is not to be shared with others while working or not working.
  
• Properly dispose of any hard copy items printed from your E-Hive access.
• Never email confidential data.
