The University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department will host its Percussion Ensemble Concert on Tuesday, December 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Thorpe Langley Auditorium.

The concert will feature a variety of musical styles and instruments.

“The most basic of percussion instruments are the hands,” said Brett Jones, DMA, professor of percussion at UW-Superior. “We will be performing Steve Reich’s famous ‘Clapping Music,’ a minimalist composition for hand clappers.”

Two pieces in the American jazz style and composed specifically for percussion ensemble will be featured – “Blues and Chaser” by Jared Spears, and “Fancy That!” by Thomas Davis. These will be offset by two Brazilian samba-style compositions and an African-inspired composition for percussion trio called “Ghanaian Sunset” by Thomas Roblee.

A traditional southern Mexican marimba trio will also be performed, as well as American bluegrass influenced “Metric Lips” by banjoist Bela Fleck.

Tickets are $5 for adults and free for students. Thorpe Langley Auditorium is in Old Main at 1710 Weeks Ave. in Superior.
