Jackets Vote to host ‘Skills for Disagreeing Better’ workshop

TYPE

The University of Wisconsin will host a “Skills for Disagreeing Better” workshop on Thursday, November 21, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Yellowjacket Union Great Room.

Free and open to the community, this event is hosted by Jackets Vote, a program of the Link Center, facilitated by Braver Angels and supported by the Center for Continuing Education.

The workshop will explore how individuals may lack basic understanding of why people on the other political side hold certain beliefs.

Braver Angels describes the workshop as “Many are tempted to regard their own side as principled and the other side as self-interested. When individuals try to communicate across this gap, they often lack the skills for listening carefully, looking for common ground and sharing their own perspectives in ways that connect rather than create more misunderstanding. Learning to disagree better in polarized times means accurately seeing where individuals differ and where common ground is shared.”

Goals of the workshop include gaining more understanding of the values and concerns of people who differ politically; learning better skills for listening in a way so that the other person feels heard and for sharing viewpoints in a way others might hear – even if they disagree.

Registration is available online.

Jackets Vote, the Link Center and UW-Superior are nonpartisan and neither endorse nor oppose any political party, candidate, or viewpoint. This is a nonpartisan voter education event for UW-Superior and the community.
