A Timeless Comedy: UW-Superior presents Shakespeare’s ‘Twelfth Night’

The University of Wisconsin-Superior Theatre Department will present William Shakespeare’s classic Twelfth Night. Performances, directed by UW-Superior assistant professor of theatre Sean Naughton, will take place at 7:30 p.m. on March 28 and 29, April 3 and 4, and at 2 p.m. on April 5 in Manion Theater.

In Twelfth Night, Viola and her twin brother Sebastian have been shipwrecked, each believing the other to be drowned. Viola disguises herself as a young man and becomes a servant to the Duke, Orsino. Meanwhile, the beautiful Countess Olivia’s subjects plot to take revenge on the miserly and uptight butler, Malvolio. A whirlwind of love professions, songs, laughter, drinks and confusion unfolds as mistaken identities and misunderstandings create chaos over who has promised what to whom. In the end, all is revealed, the siblings are reunited, and the love triangles are resolved in this hilarious comic romp.

Twelfth Night is my all-time favorite of Shakespeare’s comedies,” said Naughton. “It is a hilarious story about love, loss, courage, and the search for a companion who completes us. It is one of Shakespeare’s most popular and musical plays, with singing, dancing, and partying. There are classic bits of trickery, mistaken identity, and sword fights. The play is set in the seaside city of Illyria, but our production bends time and space into a sort of unfixed reality, like a skipping record player that needs to be reset. It’s a truly magical story that has resonated with audiences for centuries.”

Tickets for Twelfth Night are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and students and $5 for students with a valid UW-Superior ID. Tickets may be purchased at the box office in the Holden Fine Arts Center and online. Reservations can be made at (715) 394-8369. Manion Theater is in the Holden Fine and Applied Arts Center at 1805 Catlin Ave. in Superior.
