The University of Wisconsin-Superior’s Campus Recreation program, Superior Adventures, is coordinating a spring break trip in Utah.
Taking place March 8 to the 14, participants will camp near Kanab, Utah, and visit the Grand Escalante National Monument. This beginner-level trip offers the opportunity to hike, camp and sight-see the unique geography of the region.
Program Manager Sean Monnier believes that the trip reflects some of the main aims of Superior Adventures.
“We try to give an outdoor experience to people who may not have a background in that, or have not had the opportunity to go on a road trip before.” Monnier says. “It’s valuable to anyone and opens the world to them a little bit.”
The Superior Adventures program has received a great deal of positive feedback. Past events have included overnight stays at the Superior Hiking Trail, paddle boarding excursions, rock climbing activities and “Unplug to Reconnect” weekend trips.
Alongside a beautiful outdoor experience, Superior Adventures also works to build long lasting connections between students.
“We are pretty intentional in the things that we do and how we do them so we can maximize group cohesion and make sure everyone is having a good time,” Monnier said. “Because that makes all our decisions on the trail that much easier, we get the entire group communicating.”
Registration for the spring break trip is currently open and closes March 3. There are six open spots available for any UWS student interested in participating. The cost per student is $300, covering food, equipment and travel expenses.
Campus Recreation consists of a number of programs intended to promote student health and happiness. They offer an indoor climbing wall, youth camps, sports clubs and intramural sports. This fall, Campus Recreation introduced a varsity esports program.
“Students have all the power,” Monnier says.“We try to cater to that – whether it is sports, outdoor adventures, rock climbing, youth programming or anything really. We do our best to give our programs all they need.”
