‘Twas the Night Before Winter Break

‘Twas the Night Before Winter Break

‘Twas the night before break and all through the halls, not a student was stirring. All studies were paused.

The textbooks were closed with a celebratory shout, As Buzz whirred around, spreading holiday cheer throughout.

Backpacks were stuffed, flung home in a rush, campus grew quiet in winter’s cold hush.

Professors posted grades, with a smile (or a frown), while the last bus in Superior rolled its way out of town.

When out on the lawn, there arose such a sound, I sprang from my office to see what could be found! I threw on my parka and slid to the quad, snowflakes fell gently, as if kissed by a god.

The moon on the ice of the YU gave a golden glow – campus filled with such quietude. When what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a sleigh with Buzz, shouting, “Winter break’s here!”

With wings all a-whirring, his antennae so bright, He rallied the ‘Jackets to take flight that night. “On Erlanson! On Holden Fine Arts! Let’s soar! To the top of the dorms and back down once more!”

The students with spirits no longer so worn, followed Buzz’s cheer through the chill of the morn. Laughter erupted through Ross and to Hawkes, winter exams were a pain they could toss.

And then with a cheer, Buzz flew to the top, of Old Main – where he made a quick stop.

Dressed all in gold, from his head to his stinger, he struck a victory pose, like he just hit a dinger.

His eyes – how they twinkled! His coat – was fire! His wings seemed to hum like the songs of our choir. “To all of UWS, you’ve worked hard and stayed strong, now rest up, dear ‘Jackets; winter break isn’t long!”

The steps of Old Main were dusted in white, and Barstow’s tall windows glowed warmly with light. The Yellowjacket Union stood quiet, but bright, Buzz’s cheer echoed through the Superior night.

He filled every hall with the warmth of his cheer, A true yellow beacon in this cold time of year. Then he sprang to his sleigh with a soft little hum, “See you soon, dear students! Just can’t wait for spring fun!”

But I heard him exclaim as he soared out of sight, “Happy winter break, Yellowjackets, and to all a good night!”
