Two University of Wisconsin-Superior Mathematics and Computer Science teaching assistant professors will be hosting a webinar for the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC).
Heather Kahler and Kristin Riesgraf will present “One Corequisite Course for Both Statistics and Quantitative Reasoning” via Zoom on Tuesday, October 10.
“Originally, we submitted a proposal to give a presentation at AMATYC’s annual conference in November, which we were accepted to do,” said Riesgraf, who is also an assistant volleyball coach at UW-Superior. However, the conference happened to fall the same week as our high school math event, Sonia Kovalevsky Day, that we host here on campus. Ultimately, it was going to be way too busy of week, so we had to decline. Fortunately, AMATYC also hosts webinars throughout the year, so we decided to propose a webinar since presenting at the conference was not going to work this year. Our proposal was accepted, and we are excited for the opportunity to showcase the work our department has been doing on our corequisite math program.”
During the webinar, the two will share how a small mathematics department developed one corequisite course to support both statistics and quantitative literacy gateway courses. Presenters will share how they designed this corequisite, challenges and successes of its implementation, what topics to cover, and what topics to not cover, and data about student success. Topics include differentiated instruction, OERs, instructor collaboration, and just-in-time support.
The AMATYC mission is to provide high quality professional development, to advocate and collaborate at all levels, and to build communities of learners for all involved in mathematics education in the first two years of college.
