Celebrating Women in Mathematics
The University of Wisconsin-Superior will be hosting Sonia Kovalevsky Day (SK Day) on November 7, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Yellowjacket Union. SK Day is a fun day of mathematical activities and career information for 9th-12th grade women and their teachers. Schools across the region are invited to participate. The purpose of SK Day is to expose young women to the beauty of mathematics and encourage them to continue the study of mathematics in their future endeavors.
This FREE event will include two math interactive workshops, a campus scavenger hunt, lunch at the Union Café, and opportunities to learn about careers that utilize math.

Registration Information
Attendance is free for schools that register between August 28 and October 18. Register early as event attendance is limited to 150 participants.
About the Math Workshops
Workshop 1: Sending secret messages has been an important part of civilization for centuries. During the first math workshop, student will explore basic cryptography, including the Caesar cipher, decimation cipher and public-key cryptography.
Workshop 2: In this workshop students will learn the difference between drawing shapes using a straight-edge and compass and using folding paper (Origami). There will be hands-on stations where students can work up to folding a right triangle with specified leg lengths.
