Overview

The University of Wisconsin-Superior was founded as a teacher education college in 1893. That strong heritage of innovation and quality has guided our education programs for more than a century. Today, UW-Superior is still regarded as a frontrunner in PK-12 education programs. Our graduates are leaders in their field, making a lasting difference in students’ lives. The need for dedicated and highly skilled educators has never been greater and with a degree from UW-Superior, opportunities abound.

As a broad field science major, you will receive an educational overview of the sciences, preparing you to teach several branches of science, including biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental science, and physics. The program leads to grades 4-12 licensure in the State of Wisconsin and requires completion of the instruction minor.

Student Teaching

In addition to opportunities in grades 4-12 classrooms throughout your coursework, you will complete a full semester of student teaching at the end of your degree and licensure program. Our Field Experience Coordinator will help you find placements that fit your individual needs and goals.

Licensure

Our programs are designed to align with Wisconsin state licensure requirements. However, many students apply for licenses in other states, such as Minnesota and Michigan. We encourage you to check with your state’s Department of Education to determine if there are additional requirements.

No Enrollment Cap

Unlike many universities, our education programs do not have an enrollment cap, meaning there is no enrollment limit for students who meet admissions guidelines.

What You’ll Learn

Broad field science majors receive an extensive education in the sciences taught by experienced faculty. You will follow a course of study approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction that includes environmental science, anatomy, general chemistry, principles of biology, ecology, genetics, algebra-based physics, climatology, and chemistry of natural waters among other courses.

Throughout the program students will learn to:

  • Develop a strong understanding of scientific knowledge and practices in the broad areas of natural science
  • Design, implement and assess various teaching methods
  • Create an engaging learning environment for students in grades 4-12
  • Build an understanding of modern scientific research

Program Outcomes/Career Opportunities

There is a well-documented nationwide shortage of teachers, and licensed teachers are in high demand. The vast majority of our graduates find teaching jobs upon graduation, and many have multiple opportunities to choose from.

Some students also choose this major with the intention of entering graduate school or finding employment in a science-related field.

Licensure for Degree Holders

If you currently hold a degree and are interested in teaching, UW-Superior offers licensure programs that apply your coursework.
