Overview

UW-Superior’s Geographic Information Systems minor was designed by professionals in the field to meet the high and growing demand for people with technical skills. GIS is a suite of advanced sensor, computer, and communications technologies that are used to process, map, and interpret geospatial data to understand the world and solve problems. This minor will give you an advanced technical skill that can be put to use in your graduate studies or immediately in the workplace. It can be an ideal complement to many different majors, including environmental science, biology, computer science, transportation and logistics management, and many others.

This program is also available as a certificate.

What You’ll Learn

In the GIS minor, you will learn the fundamentals of GIS and modern cartography through geospatial data entry, analysis, and interpretation. The topics covered in this program include industry and state-of-the-art software (ArcGIS, QGIS, and R), history and development of geography and cartography, GPS and remote sensing, geospatial statistics, site assessment, river watershed analysis, Open Science (community data, software, and workflows) and conceptual modeling of complex systems.

Elective courses in the program include:

  • Geomorphology
  • Hydrology/water resources
  • Transportation and logistics
  • Object-oriented computer programming
  • Special research projects and internships

The value I get from my education at UWS is like nowhere else. With two majors in Computer Science and Environmental Studies (self-designed) along with two certificates in Sustainable Enterprise and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), I receive a quality education at half the cost of many other 4-year programs. Not only that, but the on-campus job opportunities allow me to get real experience in my fields of interest, which would be harder to get at larger schools.

Lucas Palomino Linares,
Computer Science, Environmental Studies (Self-Designed)

The self-designed major at UW-Superior helped me finish school with a degree that fit my needs. Since UWS did not have an environmental education major, I was able to create a program with the help of my advisor that matched my interests and career goals. I am now graduating on time with a degree in environmental education studies, and I have already secured a job at an outdoor school next fall.
