Overview

Many students have something they’ve always dreamed of studying or a unique interest they want to expand, but they don’t intend to major in it. Other times, students are seeking a way to differentiate themselves in the workplace or through graduate school applications that will help set them apart from others. The self-designed minor gives you the flexibility to design your own program of study to reflect your unique interests and career goals.  With the help of an experienced advisor, you can choose classes from a variety of subjects to create a custom course of study. We also offer a self-designed major.

Students must be in good academic standing and have earned at least 43 credits to declare a self-designed minor. This minor requires 21 credits as well as faculty approval. A proposal must be approved by the student’s academic advisor and the appropriate department chair before going before the Credits and Reinstatement Committee for final approval.

Self-designed minors may be taken online, on campus, or in a hybrid format, depending on the availability of courses in your designed course of study.

What You’ll Learn

A self-designed minor spans multiple academic departments, providing students with broad experiences and connections with a variety of faculty members. Students collaborate with a primary advisor and other faculty to tailor a unique educational journey that combines coursework with independent studies. Our knowledgeable advisors help students create programs based upon their academic aspirations and provide detailed guidance through the program approval process.

Using the Self-Designed Minor, I was able to pull together education and passion to create a minor that worked for me. I now have the skills and knowledge to accomplish my goals for my career. Because of this, I now work for the largest law firm in Minnesota doing work that I feel proud of each day.
