Overview
The University of Wisconsin-Superior was founded as a teacher education college in 1893. That strong heritage of innovation and quality has guided our education programs for more than a century. Today, UW-Superior is still regarded as a frontrunner in PK-12 education programs. Our graduates are leaders in their field, making a lasting difference in students’ lives. The need for dedicated and highly skilled educators has never been greater and with a degree from UW-Superior, opportunities abound.
The need for bilingual teachers across the country continues to grow. The Education Department at UW-Superior understands the importance of developing students with diverse skill sets to meet those growing needs. Enhancing any major with a Spanish education minor will improve your job prospects and marketability, while also addressing a key need in many school districts.
A Spanish education minor leads to grades K-12 licensure in the State of Wisconsin and would allow you to teach varied Spanish language and culture curriculum. Certification for licensure requires completion of the instruction minor and student teaching in elementary, middle, or high school.
My experience in the Spanish Education program provided me with high-quality language skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Not only could I complete advanced-level tasks in these areas, but I also learned how to teach these skills to students at all levels and find appropriate ways to engage students of all abilities.
What You’ll Learn
In addition to the traditional language courses, you will have elective options including Latin American Culture & Civilization, Voices of Hispanic Women and Latino Culture in the U.S., as well as various study abroad opportunities. Through a minor in Spanish at UW-Superior, you will:
- Become proficient in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish
- Be able to explain aspects of Hispanic culture including differences from your own culture
- Make connections in critical and creative thinking in a foreign language and other academic disciplines, including in the English language
- Be prepared to teach a foreign language incorporating the Five C’s (Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons and Community) as the standards for language learning
Program Outcomes/Career Opportunities
There is a well-documented nationwide shortage of teachers, and licensed teachers are in high demand. The vast majority of our graduates find teaching jobs upon graduation, and many have multiple opportunities to choose from.
Licensure for Degree Holders
If you currently hold a degree and are interested in teaching, UW-Superior offers licensure programs that apply your prior coursework.
