UW-Superior student teaching a group of children

Overview

The Early Childhood Education Minor is designed to introduce students to developmentally appropriate practices for children from birth to grade 3. The program will give you the knowledge, understanding, and skills needed to plan and teach a curriculum that will foster the growth and development of young children. Students gain hands-on experiences early in the program and have multiple opportunities to work with all age bands in the early childhood sector.

This program is available on campus and online.

What You’ll Learn

This minor is excellent preparation for students pursuing careers in education (e.g., early childhood, administration, parent education), law (e.g., child and family advocacy), social services (e.g., family casework, child welfare, licensing, child protection, child policy) or in various health-related areas (e.g., pediatrics, nursing, Child Life Specialist) involving children. It is also a great fit for students interested in gaining a broader understanding of children and families in today’s society.

Courses within this major include:

  • Administration of child development programs
  • Family and culture
  • Early childhood methods
  • Child guidance
  • Inclusive practices for young children
  • Mathematical concepts and early literacies methods in early childhood
  • Play and nature-based pedagogies
  • Child psychology
  • Foundations of early childhood

The ECED Program at UW-Superior has provided me with a well-rounded understanding of the development, learning, and exceptionalities of young children. Through my courses, I was able to observe, apply, and reflect on my knowledge of young children’s development with great support from my professors. I’m confident that the experiences and knowledge I have gained will serve me in my future classroom and beyond.
