UW-Superior’s Music and Education departments have a longstanding reputation for training highly qualified music educators. The Bachelor of Music Education K-12 Instrumental degree leads to Wisconsin teaching licensure in K-12 music and will prepare you to teach in any type of music classroom while providing an emphasis on instrumental music education.

Licensure

Our programs are designed to align with Wisconsin state licensure requirements. However, many students apply for licenses in other states, such as Minnesota and Michigan. We encourage you to check with your state’s Department of Education to determine if there are additional requirements.

Scholarship Audition

Students interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Music Education degree at UW-Superior will audition on their instrument (or voice). Numerous music scholarships are available for qualified students.


What You’ll Learn

The Bachelor of Music Education at UW-Superior will provide you will the skills and credentials necessary to pursue a career as a music educator. You will hone your musical skills while also learning and practicing innovative and research-based teaching strategies under the direction of experienced faculty.

Through a major in music education at UW-Superior, you will:

  • Perform a wide variety of music in large musical ensembles, chamber ensembles and solo settings
  • Receive world-class individualized instruction in your major performance area
  • Participate in ensembles as section leaders and guest conductors
  • Receive multiple opportunities to teach in a variety of settings with the support of experienced faculty
  • Understand the theoretical, historical and cultural foundations of music and apply that knowledge to enhance your teaching effectiveness and musical creativity.

Music is my passion, and I am so grateful to now be sharing it as a music teacher. As a student at UW-Superior, I had many wonderful opportunities, such as traveling to Poland with the UW-Superior Choirs, and collaborating with the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra and chorus.

Music Facilities

You will have access to multiple performance venues, practice spaces and technology labs on campus. Holden Fine Arts Center is home to the UW-Superior Music Department and a number of music facilities including the Webb Recital Hall, a renovated rehearsal hall, faculty studios, practice rooms, a music technology lab and a recording studio.

Performance Opportunities

You will have numerous opportunities to showcase your musical talents both on and off campus:

  • Ensemble performances (orchestra, band, choir, jazz, opera and percussion)
  • Student recitals
  • Local and international ensemble tours
  • Musical theatre and opera productions
  • Local arts organizations

Community Music School

The UW-Superior Music Department is home to the Community Music School which provides music lessons and classes to area youth and professional development opportunities for area music teachers. You will receive invaluable employment experience through the Community Music School as you teach students while being supported by experienced faculty.

Teaching Experience

You will have numerous opportunities to gain teaching experience throughout your coursework at UW-Superior. You can teach in the Community Music School, lead ensemble sectionals and rehearsals and work with area arts and music organizations. In addition, all music education students are provided multiple teaching experiences in the area schools at all grade levels, culminating in a semester of student teaching that aligns with their career goals.

Program Outcomes/Career Opportunities

In the instrumental emphasis, courses will cover marching and jazz band techniques and required additional ensemble participation. As a music education major, you will be prepared for a variety of careers including:

  • Band director
  • Orchestra director
  • General music teacher
  • Choir director
  • Private music instructor
