Overview
UW-Superior’s English major equips students to make effective use of the written word. You will learn how to think, read, write, listen and speak more effectively – all skills that are needed in a variety of roles in the workplace. Through the study of nonfiction and fiction literature, poetry, drama, novels and short stories, you will develop an understanding of American, British and world literary movements as you evaluate, critique and discuss them. Students who major in English at UW-Superior gain the skills to think critically, engage in evidence-based problem solving, and express themselves in multiple forms.

Teaching Licensure
Through the English Secondary Education or Broad Field Language Arts Secondary Education majors, you can acquire a teaching licensure through our highly regarded teacher education program, allowing you to teach courses such as literature, speech, and composition-based courses at the elementary and junior or senior high levels.
What You’ll Learn
Through a major or minor in English or English Education at UW-Superior, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of major texts and traditions of language and literatures in English, including cultural and historical contexts in English literature
- Analyze and interpret literary texts in a thoughtful manner
- Demonstrate the ability to express the present critical interpretations of literature in clear and effective manners
- Learn to read literary texts closely, with focuses attention to language, content and form
