Overview
Fluency in a second language is increasingly valuable in today’s world, making a Spanish minor an excellent complement to virtually any major. The Spanish minor seeks to educate students in becoming effective participants in the global community by promoting international and ethnic awareness and sensitivity to other cultures.
Taught by Dr. Jeanette Pucheu, who has published and presented at national and international conferences, this program introduces you to the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. The various courses offered enable you to lay the groundwork for fluency in Spanish and to enhance practical language skills for specific career purposes.
This program is available on campus or online.
What You’ll Learn
Studying Spanish will also improve your learning in other academic disciplines and train you to identify similarities and differences between Spanish and your native language. Through a minor in Spanish, you will become proficient in the written and spoken language and gain knowledge about Hispanic culture through courses such as:
- Beginning, intermediate, and advanced Spanish
- Conversational Spanish
- Latin American culture and civilization
- Voices of Hispanic women
- Latino Culture in the U.S.
- Special topics in literature and culture
The Spanish program is wonderful with its options for diverse and in-depth courses. I especially loved the opportunity I had to study abroad in Costa Rica. I learned so much and feel well-prepared for my future career because of my time at UWS.
Teaching Licensure
Students majoring in elementary or secondary education may minor in Spanish education through UW-Superior’s teacher education program. A Spanish education minor leads to grades K-12 licensure in the State of Wisconsin and would allow you to teach in a varied Spanish language and culture curriculum. Certification for licensure requires completion of the Instruction Minor/required teacher certification coursework and student teaching in elementary, middle, and/or high school.
Unique Opportunities
- You may work with a faculty member to design your own Spanish studies major, which includes a special study abroad opportunity in conjunction with UW-Superior’s cooperating institution in San Jose, Costa Rica.
- UW-Superior offers both short-term and semester/yearlong programs all over the world as well as throughout the United States, and the Study Away department works with each student individually to ensure that their academic and personal needs are met.
