About the Donor: Morgan and Elizabeth Murphy and Family
Morgan Murphy was the founder and publisher of The Evening Telegram. With wide interests in newspaper, radio, television, and cable antenna companies, Mr. Murphy enjoyed a national reputation as a leader in the newspaper communications industry of the United States. He was recognized as one who quickly realized the potentials in many innovations in the industry and was a pioneer in exploring these new developments.

Mr. Murphy attended Superior Central High School and attended Superior State University in 1920-1922. He received a Bachelor of Science degree (mining) in 1924 from the University of Wisconsin and attended Harvard University Graduate School in 1924-1925. In 1966, Mr. Murphy was awarded an honorary doctor of letters degree by St. John’s University at Collegeville, Minnesota.

Mrs. Murphy was chairman of the board of The Evening Telegram Co. and its affiliates. She also graduated from the Superior Central High School, attended the College of St. Scholastica, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity College, Washington, D.C. Mrs. Murphy served on the UW-Superior Foundation Board of Directors and served a term on the board as Vice President. She also served on the boards of the Catholic Charities Bureau and the St. Francis Home and was a former trustee for Northland College, Ashland, WI.

The Morgan & Elizabeth Murphy Scholarship was established by the Murphy family in honor of these two accomplished individuals.

Current students: Near the beginning of each calendar year, you will receive notification to your UW-Superior email account when it is time to apply for Foundation scholarships and how to do so. Applications usually open at the beginning of February and close at the beginning of March. Scholarships are awarded for the following academic year, beginning with the fall semester.
