25th Annual Cultural Night Brings the World to UW-Superior

The University of Wisconsin-Superior is home to students from around the world. On April 5, the World Student Association (WSA) hosted its 25th annual Cultural Night, an event that celebrated the diverse cultures represented on campus.

Upon entering the event, attendees were greeted by smiling faces and a stylish blend of formal wear and cultural regalia. The evening began at 4:30 with a social hour, providing an opportunity to connect with students, faculty and community members.

The event officially kicked off with opening statements and a delicious dinner. The meal featured dishes from seven different countries. Main courses included: chicken mole from Mexico, vegetable biryani from India and a flavorful ratatouille from France. For dessert, guests enjoyed Argentinian alfajores and Kringle.

Dinner was accompanied by the mother-and-son duo, Ina Yukka, whose uplifting performance featured a blend of flute, guitar and drums, enhancing the dining experience. The savory dishes were paired with a refreshing hibiscus juice from Mexico.

Following dinner, participants were invited to a flag show, where students had the chance to display both their flags and traditional attire. Over 30 countries were represented, with students showcasing colorful dresses, sparkling jewelry and neatly pressed shirts, each piece of clothing reflecting a unique aspect of their cultural heritage.

WSA president Maëlle Rihouey, a public leadership and changemaking major, considered the event a major success.

“It was a really long process,” Rihouey said. “But it was worth it because we received great feedback, and the board members and I had a lot of fun. Cultural Night was a wonderful opportunity to bring the campus community together through food and performances.”

The performances continued after the flag show, with the Mexico Azteca dance group taking the stage. Their dynamic blend of ballet and folkloric dance techniques captivated the audience, showcasing the beauty of Mexican culture. The quick steps, the clicking of heels on the floor, and the twirling colors combined to create a spectacular performance.

Students also had the opportunity to showcase their own talents. WSA members opened the performances with a lively dance, followed by a solo from Yoonho So. Next, Kiet Truong and Nathan Hoop delivered a piano and guitar duet, and the evening concluded with another dance performance by Kidest Seabhatleabe.

From the clothing to the food to the music, UW-Superior successfully hosted a memorable celebration of culture.
