The University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department will present “The Rite of Spring” featuring faculty members Hector Landa, pianist, Brett Jones, percussionist, and Vincent Osborn, double bass, with guest performers Lina Lee, pianist, and Ryan Loken, percussionist, from the University of Minnesota Duluth on Tuesday, October 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Thorpe Langley Auditorium as part of its University Recital Series.

“This concert will bring together faculty members from both UWS and UMD for an exciting musical collaboration,” said Landa, associate professor at UW-Superior.

The program will feature a recent arrangement of Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” for two pianos and percussion. Originally composed for symphony orchestra, “The Rite of Spring” is a seminal work in music history, known for its daring break from traditional harmonic and rhythmic conventions, helping to pave the way for modernist techniques. With its dissonant harmonies, intricate rhythms and groundbreaking orchestration, Stravinsky’s composition challenged the norms of classical music, leaving a lasting impact on 20th-century composers. Its 1913 premiere famously sparked a riot, underscoring the emotional and cultural upheaval it inspired within the music world and beyond.

The second half of the program will feature Claude Bolling’s “Sonata for Two Pianists, Percussion, and Bass No. 1.”

“This piece uniquely blends classical and jazz styles, reflecting Bolling’s signature approach to genre fusion,” said Landa. “With its lively rhythms, improvisatory feel, and virtuosic interplay among the musicians, the work showcases Bolling’s innovative ability to navigate between different musical traditions, creating a dynamic and engaging experience for the audience.”

Tickets are $15 and available at the door. Thorpe Langley Auditorium is in Old Main, 1710 Weeks Ave.
