Olympian Kara Goucher to headline UW-Superior Cenovus Energry Women in Leadership event

Yellowjacket Athletics, in conjunction with Cenovus Energy, will host its Second Annual Women in Leadership event Wednesday, April 9 in the Yellowjacket Union Great Room, located on the UW-Superior campus.

Designed to focus on helping develop the next generation of female leaders at UW-Superior and in the community, the Cenovus Women in Leadership program is a focal point of the corporate partnership between Cenovus Energy and UW-Superior.

“We are deeply appreciative to partner with Cenovus Energy to help uplift and inspire the next generation of female leaders. With such a positive response to our inaugural event last spring, we are excited for this year’s event to continue to make a positive impact on our campus and in our community,” said UW-Superior director of athletics Nick Bursik.

This year’s event will feature local running legend Kara Goucher as its keynote speaker. Goucher, a 1996 graduate of Duluth East High School, starred collegiately at the University of Colorado where she was a three-time NCAA Champion.

Following college, Goucher earned a silver medal in the 2007 World Championships in the 10,000 meters, finishing with a time of 32:2.05, making her the second-fastest American woman of all time in the event. She was a podium finisher in the New York City Marathon in 2008 and repeated the finish at the Boston Marathon in 2009.

Goucher competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Competing for Team USA, Goucher ran the 5,000 meter and 10,000-meter races and placing eighth. Four years later, at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England, Goucher competed in the marathon, finishing 10th.

More recently, Goucher is a best-selling author after penning The Longest Race. She serves on the board for the US Anti-Doping Agency and is a senior distance analyst for NBC. She is also the co-host of the popular Nobody Asked Us with Des and Kara Podcast with Des Linden.

Tickets for the event are $25 and are on sale now. They will remain on sale until March 31. The event is open to the public and will include dinner and a meet-and-greet in addition to the keynote address.
