A project six years in the making finally came to realization with the ceremonial ribbon cutting for the University of Wisconsin-Superior’s new Superior Choice Credit Union (SCCU) Stadium.
“It’s been a long time coming, but we’re excited that the day is finally here,” Nick Bursik, UW-Superior director of athletics said. “We’re excited for the community to be here and be part of the celebration for our on-campus facility that has been years in the making.”
SCCU Stadium will now serve as the home for the UW-Superior men’s and women’s soccer teams as well as the men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams. The facility features a regulation turf playing surface surrounded by a nine-lane track, a video score board, grandstand seating and a family-oriented fan zone.
UW-Superior, in conjunction with The Chamber of Superior and Douglas County, hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, October 11. Speakers included UW-Superior Chancellor Renée Watcher and Tim Foster, chief executive officer and president of Superior Choice Credit Union.
The many benefits of SCCU Stadium came to light on Saturday, October 12, with a full schedule, which included a meet for alumni of the Yellowjacket men’s and women’s track and field team, the opening of the Cenovus Energy Fan Zone and the first home games in the facility for the Yellowjacket men’s and women’s soccer teams.
The UW-Superior women’s soccer team celebrated the historic day, taking the field for the grand opening of SCCU Stadium. In their first match at their new home, the Yellowjackets faced off against Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opponent Minnesota Morris. Adding to the momentous occasion, the Yellowjackets secured an 8-0 victory over the Cougars.
Not to be outdone, the Yellowjacket men’s soccer team looked quite comfortable with their new home turf. The ‘Jackets exploded with eight goals in their first match at SCCU Stadium, defeating Minnesota Morris 8-1.
A few days later SCCU Stadium was again in the spotlight as Universities of Wisconsin Regent Edmund Manydeeds presented the Universities of Wisconsin Regents Business Partnership Award to Superior Choice Credit Union.
“We are honored to receive this award, which reflects our commitment to making a difference in Superior and throughout greater Wisconsin,” said Foster. “By collaborating with the Universities of Wisconsin, we aim to enhance financial literacy and create more opportunities for students and community members in our regions, ultimately fostering lasting financial stability and wellness.”
