The University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department will present pianist Hector Landa on Tuesday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Webb Recital Hall as part of its University Recital Series.
The program will begin with two sets of French music from the early 1900s, by Claude Debussy and Reynaldo Hahn.
“Both composers were inspired by poetry and imagery, creating colorful and vivid atmospheres,” said Landa, UW-Superior associate professor.
The second half will consist of Sergei Prokofiev’s monumental Sixth Sonata, which is the first of three “War Sonatas” he wrote.
“Composed in 1940, this piece depicts the horrors of the ongoing WWII,” said Landa. “Prokofiev alternates highly dissonant passages, evocative melodies, and sparkling, playful moments to create what is considered one of the masterpieces of the piano repertoire of the 20th century.” Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the door with cash, check or credit card. Webb Recital Hall is in Holden Fine and Applied Arts, 1805 Catlin Ave.
