UW-Superior celebrates Red Cross Day with free community events March 25

TYPE

The University of Wisconsin-Superior invites the community to celebrate Red Cross Day with multiple free events on Wednesday, March 25, in the Yellowjacket Union. Volunteers from the local chapter of the American Red Cross will join UW-Superior staff from various departments throughout the day.

Hands-only CPR will be demonstrated and taught from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Yellowjacket Union Shippar Atrium. Red Cross staff and volunteers will train participants in performing hands-only CPR and using an automated external defibrillator (AED). Hands-only CPR, which is performed without rescue breaths, is simple to learn and easy to remember. When performed immediately, CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of surviving cardiac arrest. This valuable, life-saving skill takes less than 15 minutes to learn.

Mail Call for Veterans – an opportunity for letter writing and learning about becoming a Red Cross volunteer – will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Yellowjacket Union Shippar Atrium. During Red Cross Day, attendees are invited to write notes of appreciation to local veterans. To help reduce social isolation among veterans living in care settings, the Red Cross collects more than 10,000 messages each year and distributes them to local military units and veterans.

Additionally, UW-Superior students will lead an interactive exhibit titled “Refugee for 60 Minutes,” where participants can learn about refugees, international humanitarian law and the work of the Red Cross. The exhibit will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Yellowjacket Union Great Room, with sessions available on the hour from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The exhibit provides an interactive model designed to help participants better understand both the technical aspects of the topic – such as the legal definition of a refugee and rights under international humanitarian law – and the human realities refugees face, including living conditions, food access and safety in refugee camps.

Red Cross Day is hosted by the Link Center’s Academic Service-Learning, Veterans and Nontraditional Student Center, Student Health and Counseling Services and Political Science Program.
