UW-Superior designated a Military Friendly® School for 15 consecutive years

The University of Wisconsin-Superior has been designated a Military Friendly® Gold School by G.I. Jobs®, recognizing the university’s efforts to assist military personnel, veterans and their family members in completing a college education. This is the 15th consecutive year that UW-Superior has been designated a Military Friendly® School.

“This ranking shows that during the past 15 years, our institution has invested in serving our veterans and military-connected students,” said Salisa Hochstetler, UW-Superior Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. “From having a knowledgeable benefit coordinator like Lynn Karna to having a Military Policy to accommodate veterans and their families, we have shown that we see the value of student veterans and we will strive to do better every day.”

Military Friendly® found that, “UW-Superior is dedicated to assisting military members and provides services that meet their needs in transitioning to higher education. A dedicated staff is available to assist students with securing GI Bill benefits and navigating the admissions process. Based on academic policies, veteran students receive transfer credit for education and certain specialized trainings completed in the military. With a veteran center on campus, veterans find a relaxing atmosphere, comfortable place to study, and resources that answer questions about campus and community support. UW-Superior offers a Veteran’s Transition class to ensure every veteran has the tools and support to succeed at UW-Superior.”

UW-Superior received high marks for its academic policies and compliance, admissions and orientation, culture and commitment and financial aid and assistance. UW-Superior features a Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center that provides a wide range of support programming for veterans of all ages.

Institutions earning the Military Friendly® School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. Over 2,600 schools participated in the survey. The 2024-2025 Military Friendly® Schools list will be published in the May issue of G.I. Jobs magazine.

Methodology, criteria, and weightings were determined by Viqtory with input from the Military Friendly® Advisory Council of independent leaders in the higher education and military recruitment community. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey response set and government/agency public data sources, within a logic-based scoring assessment. We measure the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for Student Retention, Graduation, Job Placement, Loan Repayment, Persistence (Degree Advancement or Transfer) and Loan Default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans.

For veterans and nontraditional students, going to college means a lot more than going to class.

Oftentimes, being an older student requires more time and commitment outside of the classroom with managing work, finances, relationships and families. The Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center (VNSC) is here to support students. Students can stop into the center at any time to learn about upcoming programs, utilize our resources or just hang out and study.

We are always growing and seeking new ways to build the space and present opportunities our nontraditional students may need to grow at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.
