The University of Wisconsin-Superior invites the community to join in celebrating Red Cross Day with multiple events on Tuesday, April 8, at the Yellowjacket Union. Volunteers from the local Red Cross chapter will join UW-Superior staff from various departments throughout the day.
The Twin Ports community will come together to celebrate and honor the resilience of military children with Twin Ports Purple Up Day. This special day is dedicated to recognizing the unique challenges faced by children of military families and showing our appreciation for their strength and sacrifices. Military children often navigate frequent relocations, long separations from parents and the emotional toll of their loved ones’ service. Twin Ports Purple Up Day is a time for the community to unite in support of these children, who contribute in countless ways to our nation’s freedom and security. We invite everyone to participate in this meaningful event by wearing purple on April 11 and by creating and displaying posters that help raise awareness of the significance of military kids from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Yellowjacket Union’s Shippar Atrium.
Hands-only CPR will be demonstrated and taught from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Shippar Atrium. Red Cross staff and volunteers will train individuals in delivering hands-only CPR and using an AED. Hands-only CPR, which is performed without rescue breaths, is simple to learn and easy to remember. When performed immediately, CPR can double or triple the chance of survival from cardiac arrest. This valuable skill takes less than 15 minutes to learn.
Additionally, UW-Superior students will teach fellow students, faculty and staff, and community members about refugees, international humanitarian law, and the Red Cross through an exhibit titled “Refugee for 75 Minutes,” which will take place from 10 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. in the Yellowjacket Union Great Room. Participation times are 10 to 11:15 a.m.; 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.; 1 to 2:15 p.m.; 2:30 to 3:45 p.m.; and 4 to 5:15 p.m. The exhibit provides an interactive model to help participants understand both the technical aspects of the topic – such as the legal definition of a refugee and rights under international humanitarian law – and non-technical issues, such as living conditions, food, and safety in refugee camps. “Refugee for 75 Minutes” aims to educate the community and university about the factors that cause people to become refugees and to foster a deeper understanding of their hopes and fears as they embark on their journeys.
Red Cross Day is hosted by The Link Center’s Academic Service-Learning, Veterans and Nontraditional Student Center, Student Health and Counseling Services and political science program.
