The University of Wisconsin-Superior will host Ojibwe Storytelling Night featuring Michael Charette (Laughing Fox) on Tuesday, February 18, at 6 p.m. in the Yellowjacket Union Shippar Family Atrium. This event is free and open to the community.
An artist, musician, writer, performer and a member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (Ojibwe), Charette is a self-taught Native American flute player. He enhances his stories with flute music and storytelling performance.
Growing up surrounded by the beauty of Lake Superior and the Woodlands led Charette to dedicate his gifts as an artist to teaching about Indigenous history, culture and heritage. His work as both a visual and performance artist is varied and tied together by the traditional wisdom of the Anishinaabe people, which is respectfully incorporated into his work with a relaxed style.
With more than 20 flutes in his collection, each with their own story voices and song, Charette weaves traditional storytelling with his own experiences. Tales of Laughing Fox performs all over Turtle Island and beyond, recently returning from a trip to York, England.
This event is part of UW-Superior’s Indigenous Storytelling Week and is sponsored by its Indigenous Cultures Resource Center and the Department of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. The Yellowjacket Union is at 1605 Catlin Ave.
