Earning Criteria

CSCI 101 – Introduction to Computer Science (3 Credit) – A first course in computer science providing a survey of current topics as well as core programming and related problems solving skills. In addition, it satisfies the mathematics requirement for University Studies.

CSCI 201 – Introduction to Programming (3 Credit) – A first programming course for students with a serious interest in computing. Topics include: data types and variables; control structures; primitive and reference data types; methods and modular programming; introduction to abstract data types and classes, and encapsulation; simple algorithms; and programming conventions and style all done in a formal programming language.

ITS 346 – Database Management (3 Credit) – Learn the science of database management to include the organization, storage and retrieval of data used in a wide range of applications. Basic theory is combined with practical examples to reinforce concepts presented in class. Moreover, students are encouraged to apply learned skills to projects in their particular areas of interest. This course is intended for the student with no or minimal exposure to database systems. It uses state-of-the-art database management system software.

CSCI 356 – Database Systems – Information Management (IM) plays a critical role in almost all areas where computers are used. The course discusses the representation, organization, transformation, and presentation of information. You will study data modeling and abstraction, relational algebra and Structured Query Language (SQL). Furthermore, the course teaches database design, implementation, querying, and administration. Pre-requisite: Having completed CSCI 201 is recommended when enrolling in this course.

What You’ll Learn

By completing the Computer Science Education Certificate, you will learn:

  • Career and Self-Development: The Computer Science Education Certificate allows current Wisconsin Licensed Teachers holding a middle school and high school license (4-12) or (K-12) an opportunity not only to learn new skills that they can apply in their current role. In addition, they can expand to a new teaching role if desired.
  • Critical Thinking: The participants in the Computer Science Education Certificate Program will gain critical thinking skills as they work to develop programs to assist with solving problems. They will be required to analyze information. They must determine a strategy to solve the problem and write programs to assist with solving the problem.
  • Technology: The participants in the Computer Science Education Certificate Program will gain critical thinking skills as they work to develop programs to assist with solving problems. Furthermore, they will be required to analyze information. They must determine a strategy to solve the problem and write programs to assist with solving the problem.
