Art Education – K-12 Education

Department: Education, Visual Arts
Delivery Method: On-Campus
Type: Concentration of Art (Visual Arts)

Overview

Combine your passion for art and teaching through UW-Superior’s art education program, where you’ll learn how to effectively teach students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. With more than 100 years of experience in training teachers, UW-Superior offers a challenging curriculum, meaningful interaction with faculty and numerous opportunities to gain hands-on experience before the final student teaching experience during your last semester.

Art Education is a comprehensive major program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree. It includes the teacher education instruction courses in the degree pathway, which are required for teaching licensure. A minor is not required.

What You’ll Learn

An undergraduate degree in art education from UW-Superior teaches students to think creatively, solve problems, and visually express their ideas to create art that is uniquely theirs. An instruction minor is included in this degree program and includes courses focused on education, learning theory, understanding students, and a student teaching experience in a classroom. You will learn from education faculty who all have experience working with K-12 students.

Through an art education concentration, you will:

  • Become proficient in the fundamentals of drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, ceramics, metalworks, fibers, and digital art, including further concentration in upper-level studio courses of your choice
  • Incorporate innovative teaching strategies into your art and lessons with an emphasis on discipline-based and choice-based art education philosophies
  • Understand the needs of diverse learners and how to meet them, including adaptive art processes
  • Demonstrate application of knowledge through K-12 pre-student teaching clinical experiences in local art classrooms

The art department at UWS is wonderful. I feel like I have found an artistic community that has welcomed me with open arms and so much enthusiasm. The teachers genuinely care about your work and help you grow artistically with consistent support.

Galleries

The Experimental Gallery is a recently redesigned space created to showcase student, faculty, and community exhibitions to visitors and the UW-Superior community. Just past the entrance to the Holden Fine and Applied Arts Center, the viewing windows allow art to be enjoyed at any time and is a reminder that art should be accessible and available to all.

The Kruk gallery provides a flexible, contemporary gallery space for art exhibits. Alumni and other professional artists’ work is displayed throughout the year. The Kruk Gallery is an important contributor and connector to the vibrant art culture in the Twin Ports.

Unique Opportunities

  • Students receive a background in studio art, art history, art education methods, children’s artistic development, and art program planning and evaluation.
  • All of our teacher education faculty have experience working with elementary and middle school students.
