Program Overview
The Certificate in Non-Profit Communications and Management will consist of three courses, including Business 380 Principles of Management (3 credits), WRIT 310 Grant Writing (3 credits), and one of either COMM 370 Organizational Communication or COMM 467 Intercultural Communication in Global, Business and Social Contexts. A total of 9 credits are required. The microcredential is designed to provide non-profit professionals with the tools they need to create and maintain effective communications and management practices to enhance their relationships with their stakeholders, including grantors, potential funders, clients, and community partners.

Earning Criteria
- A total of 9 credits are required: BUS 380 Principles of Management (3 credits), WRIT 310 Grant Writing (3 credits), and one of either COMM 370 Organizational Communication (3 credits) or COMM 467 Intercultural Communication in Global, Business and Social Contexts (3 credits).
- A minimum grade of C must be earned for each course.
NACE Competencies
- Career and Self-Development: Whether working asynchronous online or in a traditional classroom setting, students in Writing 310 and Business 380 are partnered with organizations in the community. Business 380 students have partnered with the Douglas County Humane Society, Puppa’s Pals, Duluth PD, a couple of different social service organizations in Wisconsin, and more. The non-profit volunteers to participate in those projects at high levels as they are looking for help with strategy, marketing, and various business suggestions. Students in Writing 310 identify and partner with a non-profit within their community before the course begins. In both courses these are semester long projects with a minimum of one hour per week, and an average of 2 hours per week, with some weeks requiring closer to 3 hours per week in addition to some work outside of class. There would be the possibility for non-traditional students working with current non-profits. Built into the COMM 370 course, are opportunities for students to develop their resumes, create LinkedIn Profiles, conduct interviews with people in various industries. COMM 467 also provides opportunities to critically examine organizations and the role of culture in them.
- Communication: Business 380 will advance students’ Communication and Management competencies through presentation of business strategy outcomes, team assignments and team-building. COMM 370 will advance students’ Communication skills by introducing students to theories in organizational communication. Students also do group-based projects to enhance their groups communication skills. COMM 467 is designed to strengthen students’ Communication competencies by giving them intellectual, cross-cultural and practical communication tools. Students also do team-based projects to enhance their group communication skills. Writing 310 will advance students’ Communication competencies by developing an effective and accurate boilerplate narrative, proofing and editing four different forms of grant proposals, and preparing grant proposal packages and final documentation for submission to various funders.
- Critical Thinking: Business 380 will advance students’ Critical Thinking competencies through business analysis and research-based discussion andreflection of topics. COMM 370 will advance students’ Critical Thinking skills by using case studies to develop leadership and critical thinking skills. COMM 467 is designed to strengthen students’ Critical Thinking competencies by inviting them to understand and appreciate differences. Writing 310 will advance students’ Critical Thinking competencies by identifying fiscal structures within the non-profit sector and analyzing a non-profit’s publications and financial history, as well as developing acuity with three key forms of prospect research.
- Equity and Inclusion: COMM 467 is designed to strengthen students’ Equity & Inclusion competencies by giving them tools to create an inclusive and supportive work environment.
- Leadership: Business 380 will advance students’ Leadership competencies through opportunities for enhanced responsibility.
- Professionalism: Writing 310 will advance students’ Professionalism competencies as they identify and work with the stakeholders involved in fund development at its various stages.
- Teamwork: Business 380 will advance students’ Teamwork competencies through team assignments and team building. COMM 467/ 370 are designed to strengthen students’ Teamwork competencies by giving them intellectual and practical tools which promote productivity and job satisfaction.
- Technology: Writing 310 will advance students’ Technology competencies by introducing them to the online grant searching and service platforms that are used in the field as they navigate typical granting processes.
