What’s the difference between a microcredential, an academic special interest course, and processional development class?

• Microcredential – A group of curated courses that highlight a specialized area and earn academic credit.
• Academic Special Interest Course – Single specialized courses that students and non-students can take and earn academic credit. These courses are offered through the Center for Continuing Education.
• Professional Development Class – Non-credit courses and training for career growth, offered outside a degree program.

How do I register for a microcredential?

Registration depends on the program.

• Current UW-Superior students may enroll through E-Hive.
• Non-degree seeking learners may register through Continuing Education.
• Some programs may have additional admission or registration requirements. Refer to the individual microcredential page for more specific information on how to apply to that program.

Are microcredentials part of a degree program?

Some microcredentials are embedded within academic degree programs; others are standalone but still earn academic credit and a digital badge upon completion.

What is a digital badge?

A digital badge is a visual representation of a skill or achievement, with embedded data that verifies what you learned and how you earned it. You’ll receive one upon completing a microcredential, and you can share it on social media, add it to a digital resume or ePortfolio, or include it in your email signature to show employers and colleagues your verified expertise.
