Studio art is one of the three concentrations students can select within the art and design degree. A studio art undergraduate degree from UW-Superior will give you the opportunity to study under accomplished artists who take a vested interest in helping you achieve your goals.
You will develop a knowledge of art and focus on training in a specific medium such as ceramics, expressive ecopsychology, fibers, painting, photography, printmaking, or sculpture. You’ll have opportunities to create and exhibit your art and prepare for a career doing what you love.
*Students earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree through the studio art concentration.

Fine Arts Facilities
The Holden Fine and Applied Arts Center facilities include spacious studios for painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, printmaking, drawing, woodworking, metal working, stained glass, mosaics and weaving.
What You’ll Learn
Develop your artistic voice through hands-on studio practice, creative exploration and focused study in the medium that inspires you most. You’ll build the technical skills, creative confidence and critical thinking abilities needed to create meaningful work and pursue opportunities in the arts.
You’ll gain practical skills in:
- Drawing, design and visual composition
- Color theory and artistic concepts
- Studio techniques across multiple mediums
- Creative problem-solving and artistic inquiry
- Developing a specialized area of artistic practice
- Creating, presenting and evaluating original artwork
Through studio courses, faculty mentorship and exhibition opportunities, you’ll refine your craft while building a body of work that reflects your unique perspective. You’ll have access to dedicated studio spaces and opportunities to engage with the vibrant arts community of the Twin Ports.
I thought it was a very beautiful campus and it felt safe, safer than a lot of other campuses I toured. There seemed to be more opportunities with professors helping me with beyond what they need to do. And that is kind of what brought me here.
I feel like I actually got more opportunities at UWS than I would have at a larger university. My visual art and design professors knew me well and were so supportive. They helped me in so many ways.
Galleries
The Experimental Gallery is a recently redesigned space created to showcase student, faculty and community exhibitions to visitors and the UW-Superior community. Just past the entrance to the Holden Fine and Applied Arts Center, the viewing windows allow art to be enjoyed at any time and is a reminder that art should be accessible and available to all.
The Kruk Gallery provides a flexible, contemporary gallery space for art exhibits. Alumni and other professional artists’ work is displayed throughout the year. The Kruk Gallery is an important contributor and connector to the vibrant art culture in the Twin Ports.
