The University of Wisconsin-Superior is excited to announce the Master of Social Work (MSW) program, designed for students seeking a high-quality, career-focused social work graduate degree. This advanced generalist MSW degree emphasizes personal, professional and systemic well-being.

The program prepares future social work professionals to lead in high-demand areas such as rural mental health, behavioral health and trauma-informed practice. Grounded in the science of mindfulness, nature-based interventions and trauma-informed care, this online MSW program offers a holistic lens of well-being and features instruction from regional field experts.

Program at a Glance

  • Tracks: Advanced Standing track for students with a CSWE-accredited social work bachelor’s degree and Foundation track for students with non-social work bachelor’s degrees
  • Start Dates: Foundation track begins Fall 2027 and Advanced Standing track begins Fall 2028
  • Format: Online format delivered primarily online, combining flexible on-your-own-time learning with occasional live virtual meetings and several weekend intensive workshops throughout the advanced year
  • Duration: One year for Advanced Standing; two years for the Foundation program 
  • Credits: 36 credits for Advanced Standing; 63 credits for the Foundation program 
  • Cost: $728.69/credit* (Estimated total cost for Advanced Standing: $26,532
  • Accreditation: The program is preparing to apply for Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accreditation

*Additional fees include $70 per credit activity fee and a $100 per in-person residency (3 required)

Innovative Delivery Model

This flexible online MSW program combines online coursework with interactive virtual sessions and in-person weekend workshops, giving students both convenience and essential hands-on skills practice for social work and behavioral health careers.

Two Tracks to Choose From

Graduates from accredited undergraduate social work programs may enter the Advanced Standing MSW pathway and finish in one year. Students with bachelor’s degrees in related fields can apply to the Foundation-level MSW program and complete their degree in two years.

Program Mission

The mission of the UW-Superior Master of Social Work program is to prepare mindful and resilient advanced generalist social workers to embody professional wellness, integrate nature-based approaches, lead with cultural humility and envision more equitable and liberatory systems of care, particularly in rural settings.

Accreditation Status

The MSW program at the University of Wisconsin-Superior is actively preparing pre-candidacy materials for submission to the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the national accrediting body for social work education. The program is not yet in Candidacy for Accreditation.
