The University of Wisconsin-Superior Chorus and Orchestra will join the Hibbing High School Choir for a special two-night performance of the Duruflé Requiem. Concerts will take place Sunday, April 26, at 6 p.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hibbing, Minnesota, and Tuesday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Superior.
Regarded as one of the greatest choral masterworks of the 20th century, the Duruflé Requiem combines Gregorian chant with impressionistic French harmonies and melodies.
“It’s one of the most beautiful choral-orchestral pieces ever written,” said Michael Fuchs, D.M.A., UW-Superior director of choral activities, associate professor and chair of the Music Department. “No matter your background—religious or secular—the writing is simply gorgeous. The combination of orchestra, organ and choir fills the cathedral in a powerful way that few other works can.”
In addition to student performers, the concerts will feature UW-Superior Music Department faculty, organist Rachael Kresha, and soloists Vicki Fingalson and Jeffrey Madison.
The collaboration with the Hibbing High School Choir, directed by William Seykora, provides opportunities for interaction between the student musicians.
“I find collaborations like this incredibly rewarding,” Fuchs said. “They give our students the chance to work alongside other choirs while also supporting the great music-making happening in area high schools. At the university, we see ourselves not only as educators, but as a resource for the entire region and community. This collaboration allows us to share some as meaningful and beautiful as the Duruflé Requiem with the Hibbing High School Choir and their community; it makes the musical experience all the more powerful and impactful.”

Tickets for the Tuesday, April 28, concert at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Superior, are $10 for adults and free for students and children.
