The University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department will present its Jazz Band with the Big Time Jazz Orchestra (BTJO) in a special Scholarship Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, in the Manion Theater. Proceeds from the concert will go toward a scholarship for a UW-Superior music major for excellence in jazz studies.
Under the direction of Randy Lee, senior lecturer at UW-Superior, the concert will feature an array of jazz from three groups in celebration of jazz and jazz education.
“The UWS Combo will start off with a few tunes including their own rendition of a hip All the Things You Are,” Lee said. “They will be followed by the UWS Jazz Band with powerhouse and expressive works they performed on their tour and their appearance at the Eau-Claire Jazz Festival, and capped off by the mighty Big Time Jazz Orchestra with the finest big band performers in the region, all contributing to this night for the UWS Jazz Scholarship.”
The BTJO/UWS Jazz Scholarship, first established in 2002, is awarded to a UW-Superior music student based on excellence in jazz studies. Winners are selected by the faculty of the UW-Superior Music Department. The 2026 winner will be announced at intermission during this concert.
Since its founding in 1990 by Lee, the BTJO has been known for the consistently high quality of its musicians and the challenging literature it performs. In fulfilling its mission as a non-profit organization, the BTJO regularly donates its services for charitable causes, of which this evening’s concert is only the most recent example. Other BTJO performances have raised funds for the Duluth Bethel Society, the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, along with many other charitable organizations.
Suggested donation for this concert is $15. Manion Theater is in the Holden Fine Arts Center at 1805 Catlin Ave. in Superior.
