UW-Superior selects Kidest Seabhatleabe Mitiku as student commencement speaker


The University of Wisconsin-Superior will hold its commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 16, at 2 p.m. at Siinto S. Wessman Arena on the UW-Superior campus. Kidest Seabhatleabe Mitiku has been selected as the student commencement speaker.

Mitiku, from Ethiopia, will graduate with Bachelor of Science degrees in public leadership and changemaking with a focus in international humanitarian law, along with minors in political science and behavioral neuroscience.

During her time at UW-Superior, Mitiku was actively involved in leadership, advocacy and service across campus. She served as president of the Student Government Association, where she led student-focused initiatives aimed at improving campus well-being and access.

Mitiku also served as president of the International Peace Studies Association and as secretary of the Black Student Union, contributing to efforts that promoted global awareness, dialogue and inclusive community engagement. Beyond campus, she volunteered with the American Red Cross, supporting humanitarian education and community resilience initiatives.

Following graduation, Mitiku plans to pursue a master’s degree in international affairs at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, with a focus on international security and diplomacy.
