UW-Superior’s ‘I Heart Education Day’ Introduced High School Students to Teaching Careers

The University of Wisconsin-Superior welcomed nearly 40 high school students from Superior, Bayfield, Webster and Denfeld for I Heart Education Day on Wednesday, Nov. 4.

“UWS has a legacy of preparing teachers dating back to 1893 and the Superior Normal School,” said Nicholle Schuelke, professor of teacher education and chair of the Department of Education at UW-Superior. “Innovation and quality were hallmarks of that legacy, values deeply embedded in the work we continue to do today in the Department of Education.”

The event gave students interested in education and teaching an opportunity to explore the profession and learn more about career pathways in the field.

“Our future workforce of teachers comes from the Northwoods through partnerships with our area K-12 schools and two-year colleges,” Schuelke said. “Together, we can create a pipeline of teachers who are well-equipped, passionate about learning and prepared to make a difference in the lives of students in our communities for generations to come.”

Throughout the day, participants took part in interactive workshops led by UW-Superior faculty and education majors. Sessions highlighted innovative approaches to teaching and learning while providing students with a firsthand look at the college experience. A complimentary lunch was also provided.

“This event was intended to inspire enthusiasm about the potential to impact future learners as a teacher,” Schuelke said. “Passion is contagious, whether it begins with a love of a subject area or a desire to help others. Teaching also comes with a learning curve. Students do not need to have all the answers when they first arrive on a college campus, but they do need curiosity. We hope I Heart Education sparked that curiosity and encouraged students to explore the possibilities of a career in teaching.”
