UW-Superior’s Tom Hansen Honored with Upper Midwest Emmy Silver Circle Induction

After nearly four decades of telling stories, mentoring future communicators and serving the Twin Ports community, UW-Superior teaching assistant professor Tom Hansen will be inducted into the Upper Midwest Emmy Silver Circle on Saturday, recognizing a distinguished career dedicated to journalism, broadcasting and education.

For Hansen, the honor reflects a lifelong commitment to communication and a belief that the best way to learn is by doing. Whether mentoring students through the Promethean student newspaper, serving as faculty advisor for KUWS 91.3 FM, or teaching in UW-Superior’s Communication, Media and Theatre Department, Hansen has encouraged generations of students to gain hands-on experience and pursue their passions.

A UW-Superior alumnus and member of the university’s Athletic Hall of Fame, Hansen spent 23 years as sports director at KBJR 6 and KDLH 3, becoming one of the most recognizable voices in regional sports media. His career has included television, radio, online journalism, play-by-play broadcasting and sports anchoring, earning numerous honors along the way, including regional Emmy Awards and recognition from journalism and broadcasting organizations.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, colleagues and students know Hansen for his generosity, enthusiasm and dedication to helping others succeed. Under his leadership, the Promethean was recognized as UW-Superior’s Program of the Year in both 2021-22 and 2023-24, reflecting his commitment to student journalism and experiential learning.

Hansen’s impact extends far beyond the classroom and newsroom. Through community service, mentorship and storytelling, he has helped connect the Twin Ports region for nearly 40 years. As he often reminds his students, success comes down to six simple words: “Work hard. Be kind. Have fun.”

The Silver Circle induction honors not only Hansen’s remarkable broadcasting career, but also the lasting difference he has made in the lives of students, colleagues and communities across the region.
