Sisters Choose UW-Superior Together for Their Next Chapter

For most students, heading off to college means leaving behind the familiar. For twin sisters Kate and Grace Bechtel of Lake Mills, Iowa, it means embracing a new adventure while keeping a lifelong teammate by their side.

The Bechtels, who are also part of a set of triplets, have begun their first year at the University of Wisconsin-Superior this fall after discovering the university through AAU basketball tournaments they attended during middle school.

Years later, as they began exploring college options, UW-Superior remained on their radar. Basketball recruiting opportunities and campus visits helped solidify their decision.

“When I came back to campus, I was reminded of how beautiful UW-Superior is,” said Kate. “It felt very homey.”

That sense of comfort stood out to both sisters. Coming from a small Iowa community, they appreciated UW-Superior’s manageable campus size and welcoming atmosphere.

“Being from a smaller town, I found it familiar and comforting,” Grace said. “It feels like a larger city while still having that small-town feel.”

The nearby Twin Ports community also made a strong impression. Both sisters were drawn to the area’s natural beauty, opportunities for exploration and the balance between small-town friendliness and city amenities.

Choosing the Same College

While attending the same university may seem like an obvious choice for twins, the decision was more complicated than either expected.

Kate initially imagined charting her own path in college.

“I had this vision of going off on my own and figuring everything out independently,” she said. “But as time went on, I realized this experience would be even more meaningful with my built-in best friend by my side.”

Grace saw things differently from the start.

“After all this time together, I still wanted to continue growing with someone who keeps me grounded and provides a sense of familiarity,” she said.

The sisters ultimately recognized that they could pursue their individual goals while supporting one another through a major life transition.

“Conquering the world is a lot more fun when your twin is right there beside you,” Kate said.

Ready to Learn and Lead

Both students are eager to begin classes and immerse themselves in campus life.

Kate plans to major in psychology with minors in business and behavioral neuroscience. She will also pursue a certificate in ethical leadership. Grace will major in communication, minor in business and earn a certificate in ethical leadership as well.

“I’m excited for class more than anything,” Kate said. “I love learning and challenging myself.”

Grace shares that enthusiasm.

“I like school and am excited to further my education in an area of study I chose,” she said.

Outside the classroom, both hope to build relationships, make an impact on campus and continue developing as leaders.

Kate hopes to encourage curiosity and create a welcoming environment for fellow students.

“I want people to know it’s OK to ask questions,” she said. “You learn so much when you’re willing to ask and pursue learning.”

Grace’s goals center on connection and service.

“Above all else, I hope to make a positive impact on those around me,” she said.

Support Before Day One

As they prepare for move-in and the start of basketball season, both sisters expressed gratitude for the UW-Superior employees who have helped them navigate the transition to college.

They specifically praised Yellowjacket women’s basketball coaches Ev Parsons and Owen Theune for their encouragement and support throughout the recruiting process. They also appreciated the patience and assistance provided by the university’s Technology Help Desk as they worked through the many tasks that come with preparing for college.

With move-in day approaching, excitement outweighs any nerves.

Both sisters are looking forward to meeting new people, reconnecting with friends they’ve already made and taking the first steps toward their futures.

For Kate and Grace, attending UW-Superior is more than a college decision. It’s the beginning of a new chapter, one that allows them to pursue their own ambitions while continuing a partnership that has shaped their lives from the very beginning.
