Animals on Campus at UW-Superior
Do not approach animals unless you are trained to do so. Any direct physical contact with an unknown animal, especially if it results in a bite or scratch, is serious. If an animal has bitten, scratched or had direct physical contact with a person, they should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
If you see a suspicious animal running loose on campus, call the University Police Department at 715-394-8114. Review UWS Chapter 18.08(1) for additional information regarding animals on campus. Utilize the Animals on Campus Guidelines to support requests for bringing an animal into a campus building.
Service Animals
Service animals are covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act, including those trained to provide psychological support.

Animals at Activities & Events
Per UWS 18.08(1), “…pets are prohibited in all university buildings […] except as authorized by the Chancellor.” Review the section below to review the request process.
Research/Teaching
UW-Superior utilizes the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) to provide faculty, staff and students with access to training on responsible conduct of research.

Animals at Activities and Events
As written in UWS Chapter 18.08(1), section (a) specifically states, “the presence of dogs, cats, and other pets is prohibited in all university buildings and in arboretums at all times except as authorized by the chief administrative officer. The chief administrative officer may also prohibit the presence of dogs, cats, and other pets on other designated university lands.”
At UW-Superior, requests to host an animal on campus for an activity or event, requires approval by the Chancellor. Review the Animals on Campus Guidelines for additional information and submit the Animals on Campus Request form at least three weeks prior to the planned activity. Violations may result in the removal of the animal(s) from campus, referral to student conduct or employee disciplinary processes, or trespass enforcement for visitors.
In general, the event host (UW-Superior employee) is responsible for:
- Serving as a liaison between the owner/handler/trainer of the animal(s) and campus.
- Ensuring signage is posted throughout the facilities in which the animal(s) will be present.
- Ensuring the Animals on Campus Request is submitted and approved prior to the animal(s) coming to campus.
- Properly communicating with campus stakeholders (i.e. UPD) in the event an animal has become lost and/or an incident has occurred involving the visiting animal(s).
In general, the owner/handler/trainer of the animal is responsible for:
- Ensuring the animal is always under direct and safe control.
- Ensuring the animal is healthy and that all basic needs are met to include food, water, shelter, rest, etc.
- Properly cleaning up after the animal.
- Following all applicable policies, regulations, and laws (such as vaccination requirements, local ordinances, university rules, etc.).
