Mass in G – Franz Schubert
This year, the Chorfest Honor Choir takes on two works that are sure to inspire both singers and audiences! The centerpiece is Franz Schubert’s Mass in G, one of the best-loved works in the choral repertoire. Schubert wrote it in 1815, when he was only eighteen, and it has everything that makes his music last: lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and a warmth and sincerity that reach both singers and listeners. Alongside it, the choir will sing Christopher Tin’s Baba Yetu, a Grammy-winning Swahili setting of the Lord’s Prayer full of driving rhythm and joyful energy. Students will rehearse and perform both works with a chamber orchestra under the direction of Dr. Michael Fuchs, working through two very different musical worlds in a single day. Registration opens at 8:30 AM, and the first rehearsal starts at 9:00 AM. Rehearsals run until 5:00 PM, and the concert begins at 7:00 PM.

Christopher Tin: Baba Yetu
Baba Yetu (“Our Father”) is the Lord’s Prayer sung in Swahili, written in 2005 as the theme song for the video game Civilization IV. In 2011 it became the first piece of music composed for a video game to win a Grammy Award.

Clinician Michael Fuchs
Dr. Michael Fuchs enjoys an active career as a conductor, educator, and singer. As Director of Choral Activities and Chair of the Department of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, he conducts the UWS Singers and Chorale and teaches conducting, choral methods, ear training, and music history.
He is also Chorus Director for the Lyric Opera of the North, conductor of the professional LOON COR ensemble, Artistic Director of the Twin Ports Choral Project, and Director of Choral Activities at First Lutheran Church in Duluth. Choirs under his direction have performed across the United States and internationally and have received numerous honors. A professional singer and baritone soloist, Dr. Fuchs is also co-author of Bach’s St. John Passion for the 21st Century (Rowman & Littlefield, 2023). He holds degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Westminster Choir College, and Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota.
